Gannett is reviewing print frequency of almost all of its more than 200 dailies
A large newspaper operator has decided to review print frequency in August 2022 for nearly all of its more than 200 dailies. Gannett is not alone in considering reducing print frequency. In 2018, the Plain Dealer in Cleveland scaled back home delivery to just three days. Other bellwether independent papers, such as the Tampa Bay Times, have cut back on print frequency. Some have even canceled daily print editions altogether.
The company recently cut back on staff, and in August 2022 will review print frequency for nearly all of its more than 200 dailies. The company is transferring the design work from the Herald-Times to other design hubs. But the front page of the Herald-Times, for instance, will include more feature stories and be longer because they do not depend on deadlines.
The company’s e-editions are slated to go digital by August 2022, and it is currently reviewing print frequency of most of those papers. The e-editions are intended to serve as bridge products for print readers. Gannett is also experimenting with video newsletters to appeal to younger audiences. Regardless of the new model, Gannett is still committed to preserving its daily newspaper’s traditional print format.
USA Today is substituting e-editions for Saturday coverage
The Montgomery Advertiser, Tuscaloosa News, and Gadsden Times are all part of the USA TODAY Network. The newspaper will no longer publish a print edition on Saturdays, but will produce a full digital replica seven days a week. This includes a crossword puzzle and USA TODAY Network news. In August 2022, the Montgomery Advertiser will stop delivering its print editions to homes. Subscribers will be able to access all e-Editions across the USA TODAY Network, including the Gadsden Times’ crossword puzzle.
